George Floyd's family celebrates conviction of former police officer

George Floyd's family and also the President of the United States, Joe Biden, celebrate the American court decision that sentenced former police officer Derek Chauvin on Tuesday, 20. He asphyxiated Floyd last year and the image shocked the world. .

Yesterday, a video of the family gathered in the living room, following the trial, went viral on social media. The images first show the apprehensive family and then commemorating the long-awaited conviction. (watch below)

The President of the United States said in a statement after the verdict that prejudice is a 'blemish' in the history of the country and calls for solutions

Biden said he was "relieved" and spoke on the phone with George Floyd's family members shortly after the jury decided on the guilt of ex-police officer Derek Chauvin.

"We are all so relieved," said Biden. “You are an incredible family. I would have loved to be there to hug you, ”he said, promising to take Floyd's family to the White House on Air Force One.

In the Oval Office, the president made a formal statement on the verdict, broadcast on television and denounced the “systemic racism” that “stains” the soul of the United States.

"The guilty verdict will not bring George back," said the president. But it can mark the time for a "significant change", he added.

Biden called for unity to the nation and not to allow "extremists who have no interest in social justice" to "succeed".

Earlier, the American president had considered the evidence of the crime to be "devastating".

Derek Chauvin killed Floyd by asphyxiation in May last year.

He was filmed on video kneeling for more than nine minutes on Floyd's neck, even when the burly 46-year-old man, handcuffed, begged, "Please, I can't breathe."

The images, recorded by pedestrians who witnessed the arrest of Floyd, accused of buying cigarettes with a fake $ 20 bill, were watched by millions of people inside and outside the country.

About 400 protesters marched in the city on Monday calling for Chauvin's condemnation, repeating in chorus:

"The world is watching, we are watching, do it right". Then they celebrated the verdict and hugged each other on the streets.

The verdict will also affect Derek Chauvin's three former colleagues - Alexander Kueng, Thomas Lane and Tou Thao - who will be tried in August for "complicity in murder".
