Veganism: how to join, benefits and necessary care

Nutritionists and key people show benefits and challenges of adhering to the vegan diet

Veganism is a lifestyle that excludes, as far as possible and practicable, products of animal origin - meals to how to dress or choose cosmetics. In food, meat, eggs, milk and honey are left out, for example, for the motivation of reducing environmental impacts, animal exploitation, improving health, among others. The definition is The Vegan Society, based in the United Kingdom and considered the founding entity of veganism in the world.

Due to specific foods with high prices on the shelves, it is common for many to associate veganism with an expensive diet that is incompatible with the average Brazilian reality. However, nutritionists who specialize in this type of food and people who live this lifestyle point out how to make healthy dishes that can fit in your pocket, without food of animal origin. On the other hand, professionals also point out restrictions and supplements that deserve attention in order not to harm health.

Benefits of veganism

According to the Brazilian Vegetarian Society (SVB) and specialized nutritionists Maria Julia Rosa and Isabel Andrade, veganism:

Prevents chronic-degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's

Decreases risks of cardiovascular disease

Reduces the development of diabetes

Lowers the possibility of obesity

Decreases risk of eye disease

Reduces kidney disease

Lowers cancer risks

Assists in muscle recovery and exercise performance

SVB comments that vegan diets "bring beneficial results in the prevention and treatment of several non-communicable chronic-degenerative diseases". Nutritionist Maria Julia Rosa adds by stating that followers of veganism have lower risks of cardiovascular, eye, kidney and cancer diseases.

Another study, this time published in the journal Nutrients, points out that scientists have reviewed 77 studies on the benefits of vegan diet in the routine of professional athletes. The results show that there was an improvement in performance, in muscle recovery after competitions and a decrease in the chances of cardiovascular diseases.

But the president of the SVB warns that, in order to have all these benefits, it is necessary to maintain a balanced diet within veganism. It is necessary to adhere to healthy options and supplements to replace nutrients, "not filling, for example, the dish of chips and pasta", he comments.
